Brief History

Originally called the Patea Museum and then the South Taranaki District Museum, the institution has its origins in the passionate collectors of the Patea Historical Society who first opened the doors in 1974. The contents of the collections reflect the eclectic and wide-ranging interests of the founders and subsequent donors. Their generosity has ensured that the current South Taranaki District Museum Trust Board and staff have plenty of work in cleaning, sorting and relocating the collections in the new building.
