Work is progressing well on repairs to the Hawera sewer main pipeline which was washed out after heavy rainfall on 3 January says South Taranaki District Council group manager of engineering services, Neil McCann.

Mr McCann says the repair work is a two stage process. The first stage, which is now largely complete, is a temporary fix while a more permanent solution is planned.

“The sewer main has been temporarily repaired and the embankment has been reinforced with large concrete blocks from the demolition of the old hospital site,” says Mr McCann.

“This work will continue over the next few months with the whole embankment stabilised using this demolition material. A permanent solution is being investigated, with one option being the re-alignment of the pipeline and building a pipe-bridge upstream of the existing causeway,” says Mr McCann.

Yesterday morning the Taranaki Regional Council who has been monitoring the Waihi Stream gave it the all clear as water quality was back at normal levels.

“The warning sign erected at Waihi Beach has been removed and it is now fine to gather shellfish,” he says.
