Gambling Policy Review

Gambling Policy Review

The South Taranaki District Council is currently consulting on our Class 4 Gambling and TAB venues Policy and we need your feedback by 4pm on Friday 13 September 2013.

The Council is required to have a gambling policy which covers Class 4 gambling and Totalisator Agency Board (TAB) venues which must be reviewed every three years.

Council’s current policy allows gaming machines to operate only in premises where the primary activity is for the purpose of: a sporting activity, club activities or for the sale of liquor or the sale of liquor and food that are consumed on the premises. The primary activity of any premises cannot be solely for the purpose of gambling.

The current policy has a limit of machines that can operate in the district, which is 154.

Council’s policy also prohibits the establishment of any stand alone TAB venues in the district.

Proposed changes

The only proposed change to the Council’s existing policy is that the limit of 154 gaming machines be reduced to 140.

The reason for the proposed change is that the limit of 154 has not been reached in the past three years. Currently there are 131 machines across the district and this has been the case for some time. Reducing the limit on gaming machines from 154 to 140 better reflects the current demand in South Taranaki.

The Council’s Class 4 Gambling and Totalisator Agency Board (TAB) Venues Policy is open for public consultation from 15 August to 13 September 2013. This is your chance to let the Mayor and Councillors know your views, so please take the time to have your say.

This is only a summary of the Gambling Policy and the proposed changes. To read the full proposal and/or make a submission click on the links below.
