Two New Zealand Literary giants will judge this year's Ronald Hugh Morrieson Awards.

South Taranaki writers will be extemely excited to learn from this year’s short story judge, Dame Fiona Kidman, and poetry judge James Brown.

Dame Fiona Kidman is a leading contemporary novelist, short story writer and poet. Kidman has won numerous awards (including the 2019 Ockham Awards) and was awarded an OBE and a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to literature.

James Brown is a poet and short fiction writer. His first book of poems Go Round Power Please won the Jessie Mackay Best First Book of Poetry Award. Brown has been a finalist in the Montana New Zealand Book Awards three times.

District Librarian Pam Jones says it was a real coup to secure these names as judges for this year's competition.

"It shows the punch the Ronald Hugh Morrieson Awards pack in New Zealand’s literary world that we can draw such talented writers to South Taranaki to encourage, inspire and help shape future writers," she says.

The judges will be running public workshops on Saturday 15 June for participants entering the Open category of the Awards. Dame Kidman will also participate in author chats at Hāwera and Eltham LibraryPlus on Wednesday 12 June, while James Brown will entertain during a poetry evening at Hāwera LibraryPlus on Thursday 13 June.
