The Hon Paula Bennett has been named the new Minister of Local Government.
Local Government New Zealand President, Lawrence Yule, congratulates Ms Bennett on her appointment.
“We look forward to working with Minister Bennett and will seek to meet, brief and discuss LGNZ’s position on key issues on behalf of our members,” says Mr Yule.
“2014 will be an important year for local government. As the country’s national organisation representing local authorities, we are working with our members to power regional and national success. As such, we are currently focused on a number of important issues that are critical to powering successful local economies and building vibrant communities across New Zealand.”
Ms Bennett’s portfolio includes roles as Minister for Social Development and Associate Minister of Housing. She replaces the outgoing Minister of Local Government, Hon Chris Tremain who is retiring at the next election.
LGNZ would like to thank Mr Tremain for his hard work during his time as Minister of Local Government – members will appreciate his willingness to understand and engage with our sector and the progress made on important matters. Ms Bennett will take over on 28 January.
Prime Minister John Key has also announced the new Associate Minister of Local Government will be Peseta Sam Lotu-liga, MP for Maungakiekie.
