Nominations sought for Sporting Hall of Fame
Wednesday, May 24, 2017
South Taranaki’s sporting elite are to be celebrated in a new Hall of Fame which will be launched at a special ceremony on 21 July at the TSB Hub in Hawera.
The Sporting Hall of Fame is a partnership between the Hawera Rotary Club, the main funders, and the South Taranaki District Council (STDC).
TSB Hub manager, Mark Mekalick, says a committee (made up of Mayor Ross Dunlop, Councillor Jack Rangiwahia, Rotary club members Selwyn Metcalfe, Malcolm Greenhill, and community representative Lionel Shaw) has been working hard to get to this point and were now calling for nominations.
“Due to the large number of elite South Taranaki sportspeople the criteria for inductees has been set high,” says Mr Mekalick. A nominee must satisfy at least one of the following criteria to be considered for the Hall of Fame.
The criteria are;
Achieved international success by winning Gold, Silver or Bronze (podium finish) at either the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championship or an officially approved elite level international event; or
Been a senior athlete or a significant contributor of a national representative team at an elite international level; or
Made a significant contribution and distinguished service to elite sport which has brought credit to South Taranaki.
As well as satisfying these criteria, Mekalick says inductees must have a strong association to South Taranaki and have spent a significant period of their life living in the district.
For the launch of the Sporting Hall of Fame three sportspeople will be inducted at the 21 July ceremony.
“We are really excited to see what nominations come in as there is a wealth of sporting talent that has come from South Taranaki. It’s also going to add an inspirational dimension to the TSB Hub,” he says.
Nominations close on 9 June and forms can be picked up from TSB Hub reception, South Taranaki i-SITE or downloaded by clicking here.
