Opunake residents - please urgently conserve water
Tuesday, May 28, 2019
UPDATE - Wednesday 29 May 8:30am
Thank you for your help to conserve water yesterday.
The Water Treatment Plant and Reservoir are now fully recovered, and you no longer need to conserve water for this emergency event (but we always ask that you use water wisely).
We were able to clear the intake blockage yesterday, and along with trucking water to the Water Treatment Plant and opening a connection to the Cold Creek water supply the reservoir was able to recover overnight.
We will continue to monitor the intake as there is still a lot of sand accumulated upstream.
Thanks again for your efforts and patience.
UPDATE - Tuesday 28 May, 2pm
The blockage to the clarifier and intake has now been cleared.
We have been trucking water to the Water Treatment Plant and opened a connection to the Cold Creek water supply to supplement the Opunake supply. The reservoir is slowly recovering and we anticipate the system will be back to normal by late afternoon tomorrow (Wednesday).
We ask that residents continue to conserve water where possible to hasten this process.

ŌPŪNAKE RESIDENTS – PLEASE URGENTLY CONSERVE WATER
Due to the unstable nature of the Waiaua catchment, the intake to our water treatment plant has been blocked and the town reservoir is critically low.
We are working to clear the intake and are undertaking other measures to ensure we continue the supply. However, to make sure we don’t run out of water we urgently need your help - please conserve and fix any leaks.
Ways to help conserve water include:
Fix any leaks and dripping taps
Take short showers rather than baths
Use full loads to wash clothes / dishes.
Report any leaks seen on the public system so we can fix them
Thank you for your assistance.
