Warning for Opunake Lake
Thursday, March 08, 2012
South Taranaki District Council is issuing a precautionary warning for people to avoid contact with the water in Opunake Lake due to high levels of Escherichia coli (E. Coli).
A routine sample done by the Taranaki Regional Council has found high levels of the bacteria in the lake and the Taranaki District Health Board’s Medical Officer of Health informed Council that a health hazard may exist.
E. Coli can possibly cause gastrointestinal illness and respiratory health effects.
South Taranaki District Council (STDC) communications manager, Gerard Langford says Council is urging people not to come into contact with the water and has erected signs at the lake.
The Regional Council will conduct further tests after the next dry spell to determine whether the water is once again safe for recreational use.
