South Taranaki has 8 recognised campgrounds across the district. Seven of these have formal charges and one is run as a ”Freedom” camp but donations are encouraged.

Opunake Beach Holiday Park

Opunake features stunning views of the coastline and the iconic Mount Taranaki. Hawera Holiday Park 

Ideally located beside King Edward Park, the PowerCo Aquatic Centre and the TSB Hub, the motorcamp has 6 Cabins, powered sites and unpowered. A handy 5 minute walk to the local CBD and other attractions such as Naumai Park, the Water Tower and i-SITE makes this a perfect spot for a family holiday or the passing traveller. Internet is available for purchase (Zenbu).

Patea Dam

The journey starts at the end of Ball Road – just North of Patea. The road is unsealed and not for the faint hearted, but you will be rewarded by the atmosphere of this special place.  Excellent bushwalks, hot showers, boat ramp for many water activities. NZ’s longest manmade lake. Fee: $10 per site per night (based on a family of 4).

Wai-inu Beach

New Zealand the way it was. Situated on Nukumaru Parade, Waitotara beach. Toilets and children’s playground. Right on the beachfront.  Long beach walks, fishing, boat access. Maximum stay is 28 days. Room for motorhomes, various unpowered sites. Instructions on using this campground can be found at the entrance.Set fees apply at $15 per site per night from 1 December to the end of February, otherwise $10 per site per night.

Kaupokonui Beach Motorcamp

Kaupokonui Beach Camp is located on Kaupokonui Heads Road – Off Lower Glenn Road Manaia.

Kaupokonui is a beautiful unique setting with many original kiwi bachs surrounding the campsite and lower reserve, it is a very family friendly place and well worth the trip to enjoy amongst other things a breathtaking sunset. The campground boasts a brand new ablution block, with 26 powered sites ($55 per night for 2xadults and 2x children) and unpowered sites ($50 per night), 1 cabin sleeps 5 ($65 per night), 1 cabin sleeps 7 ($85 per night). There is a small shop that opens during the summer that provides basic necessities. Also available; children’s play area, river for swimming and fishing – as well as a safe swimming area in the sea and surf beach.

Patea/Carlyle Beach Motorcamp

Situated at picturesque Mana Bay, Patea and close to the walkway, the beach, the boat ramp and children’s playground. Four Cabins and numerous powered and unpowered campsites. Check out the Patea Beach Motorcamp website for more information.

Waverley Camp

Formal fees paid on an honesty system to the Waverley LibraryPlus office. Situated on Coleman Ave Waverley Beach. 1 Cabin ($15.00 per night), 25 sites powered ($12.00 per night) and numerous others unpowered ($10.00 per night). Close to the beach and children’s playground.

Te Ngutu O Te Manu

Run on an honesty system $5 per night (2 people) $1 per extra person. Childrens playground and a large area for camping, cricket and other activities. There are no powered sites but toilet facilities are available. Situated on Ahipaipa Road, Okaiawa. A very interesting historical site dating back to the Taranaki land wars. A relaxing place with plenty of birdlife away from it all.
