Arts Fest South Taranaki returns this year to celebrate highlight the arts within seven Taranaki townships in late spring.
Complementing the popular regional garden festival, South Taranaki District Council introduced Arts Fest to showcase the people, places, spaces and artistic wealth in the strict. A diverse range of exhibitions, pop-ups, events and workshops will offer local communities and visitors a forum to participate and enjoy visual and performing arts.
Arts Fest will launch with the Taranaki National Arts Awards ceremony in Opunake on 26 October. Celebrating its 17th year, the annual awards exhibition features over 300 artworks in seven sections with $10,000 in prizes. Exhibitions at community and public galleries include ‘The Big Bang’ at Aotea Utanganui –Museum of South Taranaki in Patea and ‘A World of Stitches’ at Lysaght Watt Gallery in Hāwera. Pop up venues for the festival include artist studios, an interactive installation called ‘Before I Die’ at the Hāwera Town Square and a collective of artists at the seaside village of Ohawe.
Hāwera Memorial Theatre will host Selah Saints and The Slacks, bringing a great night of music to their fans. Everybody’s Theatre in Ōpūnake will again present the Everybodys’s NZ Film Festival alongside The Great Ōpūnake Yarn Bomb, returning even bigger and brighter this year.
Hands-on workshops on offer include introduction to printmaking, mosaics and assemblage art at Hāwera Art School & Creative Space, as well as watercolour painting, experimental drawing and the chance to make your own poi.
“Arts Fest offers a chance for people to engage in the arts in our cool small towns while touring around the mountain. The festival is a forum for artists to showcase their talents and skills under the umbrella of regional creativity” says South Taranaki District Council Arts Co-ordinator, Michaela Stoneman.
Arts Fest South Taranaki runs from 26 October – 4 November 2018.
