Wednesday, December 07, 2016

A photograph of the Waverley Clock Tower by local photographer Sindy Hooper has been chosen by the community for the new town entrance signs.

South Taranaki District Council (STDC) community development manager Claire Symes says local residents were asked to vote for their preferred image from five on display in the Waverley LibraryPlus during November.

“Twenty eight images were initially submitted for the signs and a panel of Waverley artists reduced these to the top five,” says Claire. “These five images were then put on display at the Waverley LibraryPlus for residents to vote on. It was a great way to engae the community and we received 229 votes overall,” she says.

The results of the vote were: Clock Tower by Sindy Hooper received 70 votes, Coastal Cliffs by Gerry Leibbrandt 59 votes, Coastal Beach Scene by Gerry Leibbrandt 44 votes; Border Rugby Family by Nicky Gray 38 votes and Rural Scene – Dogs and Child, also by Nicky Gray 18 votes.

Patea Community Board member, Dianne Lance, who announced the winner at a morning tea at the Waverley LibraryPlus today said the voting had created a lot of interest and discussion about what represented Waverley. She thanked the photographers for submitting their images and the panel for shortlisting the top five.

The new Waverley town entrance signs will be installed in the New Year.
