Expo for 50's plus
Friday, January 28, 2011
The mini expos were organised in response to community requests after the very popular “Older, Wiser and So Much to Do” expo held in Hawera in 2009.
STDC community services manager, Karen Mekalick, says the free expos, which run under the name SeniorLink Cafe, provides people with an opportunity to find out about service providers and other organisations available to them in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
“The expo will present the services and benefits available to older people and promote the clubs and activities in their area,” says Mrs Mekalick. “For example the Council will promote the Rates Rebate scheme and its LibraryPlus services, Work and Income will promote the benefits it has available, Age Concern its support services, and so on,” she says.
Local Lions Clubs have agreed to act as hosts at the mini expos, to meet and greet attendees and to serve morning tea which is free.
Mrs Mekalick says she expects there to be more than 15 different organisations and clubs offering help, advice and information at each expo.
“The expos are all about getting government agencies, social services and community groups in one place at one time in a convenient, informal setting,” she says.
