Fire Restrictions Introduced in Patea Ward

Fire Restrictions Introduced in Patea Ward

Friday, January 21, 2011

The restrictions, which come into force from midnight Monday 24 January, mean that permits are required for all open air fires. Residents who need a permit, for which there is no charge, should contact the Council on 0800 111 323.

Mr Gunn says the area south of Hawera down to Wanganui is very, very dry.

“Fighting fires puts a major drain on the areas water supplies, which are already under severe stress. We don’t want to be using water to put out fires if we can avoid it,” he says.

Inspections will be carried out on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 48 hours notice is required beforehand so that inspections can be arranged.

Mr Gunn says residents need to be aware that if they light a fire without a permit, or if a permitted fire gets out of control, the full costs of extinguishing these fires will be charged to the property owner.

People who live within 1km of DOC land also need to contact the Department of Conservation for a permit to light fires.

Residents are also reminded to phone the Fire Service on 111 if they see any fires.

The land area of the Eltham Drainage Committee has year round fire restrictions.
