The Patea New Pool Committee is swimming in success and excitement after $450,000 towards the new facility hasbeen granted from the Lotteries Community Facilities Fund and the Lions Foundation.
In 2009/10the South Taranaki District Council allocated $633,000 to upgrade the existing pool or build a new pool at the Patea Domain as long as the remaining funds could be raised by thecommunity before March 2012. With the latest contributions, total funds raised now tops an estimated $675,280 which was the committee’s target.
David Honeyfield, chairman of the relocation committee, said that they were always confident that they would achieve their goal.
“The amount of community support was unbelievableand it was that support which really helped with ourfunding applications. It simply would have not been possible without so much commitment,” he says.
Fundraisers organised by the New Pool Committee have included a golf tournament and a dinner and auction. In addition, they are pleased to receive funds from counter collections, soap sales, the television show “It’s in the Bag”, the Christmas parade bucket collection, and donations made by individuals and groups.
Mr Honeyfield says the amount of support just highlights how important locals regard the project to be. “The new pool on the Patea Domain will be much more accessible to the surrounding schools and it will bring all the towns sporting facilities into one area.
Mr Honeyfieldalso made mention of theCouncil’scommunity development team leader Claire Symes, who he said was key in making the new pool a reality. “We wouldn’t have been able to do it without her; we wouldn’t have been able to do it without anyone.”
Although the fundraising target has been reached, the fun isn’t over and the planned variety concert and mayoral rugby match are still going ahead. “We still need to clean up the current pool site said Mr Honeyfield.
