Hawera Town Centre Strategy - Public Open Days

Hawera Town Centre Strategy - Public Open Days

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

Transforming the “heart of Hawera” into a more attractive and vibrant place to live, work and visit is a key goal of the Hawera Town Centre Strategy and the Council wants to know what you think.

Public Open Days are being held on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 August for members of the public to offer their own ideas for the strategy and check out some initial concepts.

The open days will be held at Dimock’s furniture store on Regent Street.

Project Manager, John McKenzie says urban designers (Boffa Miskell) and Council staff will be available at the Open Days (Friday from 11am till 6pm, Saturday from 10am till 1pm) for residents to ask questions and share their ideas.

“Residents will also be able to see how the project has progressed to date, check out some initial concepts and become familiar with the principles being employed to develop the strategy,” says Mr McKenzie.

“The key thing to remember is that at this stage these concepts are just that – concepts which are being used purely to encourage ideas and facilitate the planning process. The council has not agreed to any options,” he says.

“Once completed however the town centre strategy will guide future actions by the Council and form a basis for property owners to make future development decisions,” says Mr McKenzie.

Bizlink Hawera is working closely with the Council and is helping fund the strategy.
Chairman, Andy Beccard, says Hawera’s current town centre is simply not meeting the needs of retailers or residents.

“It was essentially developed over 100 years ago and our community’s social and retail needs have changed considerably over that time. This has also been exacerbated by the growing trend in online retail, says Mr Beccard.

“Population growth and attractiveness of town centres are also closely linked. This strategy will provide real potential to build a vibrant and economically sustainable town centre that is a showcase to attract new residents, business and visitors. It will provide a big injection of confidence into our retail and service centre and will also give property owners confidence to reinvest in the town,” he says.

The Hawera Town Centre Strategy will also be a model that can be used for planning upgrades in our smaller communities in South Taranaki.
