Opunake Cemetery Upgrade

Opunake Cemetery is undergoing some work to extend the space available for plots.
South Taranaki District Council (STDC) property and facilities manager John Sargeant says one of the cemetery’s internal hedges is being partially removed so that the berms developed ten years ago can be extended.
“The removal of the hedge will allow an extra 24 plots which will be enough for the next three to four years given a lot of plots in the existing area are reserved,” says Mr Sargeant.
“The hedge will be replaced with a timber wall to provide shelter from the wind during services and which will incorporate seating. By removing some of the hedge we are able to increase the size of the cemetery and save around $80,000 which would have otherwise been needed,” he says.
Mr Sargeant says a memorial wall is also being incorporated into the project so that families which relate to the area but have loved ones buried elsewhere can memorialise their family/whanau in Opunake for posterity.
The project is expected to be complete by mid March
