A new Green Flag is flying over South Taranaki’s premier, King Edward Park in Hawera.

South Taranaki District Council, community facilities manager Phil Waite says the flag is an internationally recognised mark of a quality park or green space, called the Green Flag Award.

“King Edward Park was recently assessed for a Green Flag Awardusing eight criteria including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability, community involvement, safety and a sense of welcome,” says Mr Waite.

“Internationally 14 countries participate in the award and King Edward Park is one of only 23 recipients in New Zealand. The award reflects the dedication that goes into the park's ongoing development and year-round maintenance. It is a tribute to the hard work of the Council’s Parks’ team and the ‘Friends of the Park’ volunteers,” he says.

The Green Flag Award is an English based award system. In New Zealand, it is promoted and administered by the New Zealand Recreation Association.
