Sand Levelled at Opunake Beach
Wednesday, September 17, 2014
Last week work started on levelling off the sand at Opunake Beach to improve access to the beach facilities.
John Sargeant, South Taranaki District Council manager of property and facilities says the sand deposits have been building up over many years form on shore winds to the point where the bollards, barbecues and other facilities were being partially buried.
“The excess sand is being dumped on the beach on a low tide so it will go back into the ecosystem under resource consent from the Taranaki Regional Council. Soil is being brought in to spread over the beach area so grass seed can be sown to allow the beach facility to recover in time for the summer season,” he says.
Local Contractor CF Fleming is undertaking the work which is expected to take a week to complete.
