The ‘Power to the Puoro’ concerts were brought to the communities of Patea & Eltham by South Taranaki District Council to celebrate Puanga - The Maori New Year. Over 700 students, staff, community and whanau will attend the free concerts, including rural schools, kohanga reo and kindergartens.
STDC's arts coordinator, Michaela Stoneman says, “We are stoked to host an international tāonga pūoro artist in South Taranaki - it's a unique experience to hear traditional Māori instruments and relate the sounds to our natural environment. Jerome incorporates sound technologies like special effects and looping to create multi-layered soundscapes that are felt both physically and spiritually."
Michaela says Jerome's concert is an interactive show, and his fun way of storytelling really draws the audience in and creates a lot of interest.
" We may have some budding tāonga pūoro musicians in our midst in South Taranaki after being inspired by these shows," she says.
Michaela says all are welcome to attend the free performance at Eltham Primary School at 10am Friday 22 June. He will also run a waiata workshop with the Kapa Haka roopu at Manaia Primary School on Friday 22 June.
