Youth art in the spotlight
Monday, May 14, 2012
A new show opening at Eltham’s Village Gallery celebrates the creativity of youth in our communities. The mixed media exhibition, Love the Skin You’re Inwill present artworks by young people aged between 8 and 15 who attend the Eltham based Youth Health and Development Service, E-Town.
Love the Skin You’re Incoincides with Youth Week, a festival held in May annually, designed to celebrate and value youth for the part they play in our society.
The artworks were created during the April school holiday and after-school programmes. Hands-on workshops with New Plymouth graffiti artist Phil Jones and Stratford photographer Ross Nolly were held to inspire and encourage the kids to rise to the challenge and try something new. The results are vibrant and optimistic, reflecting the aim to show positive images of youth within their own community.
E-Town youth have also been involved with organising the exhibition, including graphic design, marketing, installation and catering for the opening event. “This project demonstrates a fantastic collaborative effort between local youth, a youth support organisation, our community gallery and council” says Rev Peter Barleyman, E-Town leader. “By encouraging young people to present their talents, share ideas, and focus on the positive aspects of being young we all grow and learn more about each other”
All are welcome at the opening at 5.00pm, Tuesday 15 March - come along, enjoy refreshments and meet the young artists. Exhibition runs until 8 June 2012 – The Village Gallery, 166 High Street, Eltham.
