KERE TAPUTORO - TE WAKA O TAMARERETI (THE MILKY WAY)

Aotea Utanganui, Patea, 10am

Kere will share her knowledge of the stars, the Maramataka; anything and everything concerning this rich kaupapa. Come along and learn about Puanga and Matariki. Please being a plate for a shared kai afterward. All welcome.

PUANGA KAI RAU FESTIVAL

The community of Parihaka welcomes all to join in their upcoming Puanga celebrations. Celebrating Puanga and the Maaori New Year is a way of paying respect to the unique place and land on which we all live. The festival takes place at the world-famous Taranaki village of Parihaka and celebrates the rise of the star Puanga (Rigel). The is a FREE festival for the whole family. CELEBRATE PUANGA

The rise of Puanga (Rigel) marks the start of the Maaori New Year. It is a time to celebrate and reflect. It is a time to remember those who have passed on and a time for learning. Come share some kai as we celebrate the changing of seasons together. Bring a plate to share or just bring yourself. All welcome.

The LibraryPlus team will work with children 5-12 years to craft their own constellation rock (Puanga). All welcome.

HE KAKANO - THE SEED

Learn about why we plant during Puanga, paint a mini mural, then plant a seed to watch it grow. All children welcome.

TIAHO

Lysaght Watt Gallery, Union St, Hawera, (Monday - Friday 10am - 4pm, Saturday 10am - 1pm)

Toi o Taranaki ki te Tonga artists celebrate the reappearance of Puanga through their art forms. The exhibition name Tiaho means to 'emit rays of light'. The refers to the stars we watch for and to the artists whose works enlighten our minds. "Ko Puanga te pae aarahi i ngaa tohu o te tau hou i te pae ururangi."

POI CREATION WORKSHOP

Hawera LibraryPlus, 10am - 12noon and 3 - 5pm

Join local Maaori artist Rhegan Brooks (Ngaaruahine/Te Whanau-A-Apanui) to creat your own set of poi to take home. Based on the traditional style of short poi, you will use colourful fabrics to add a contemporary twist. Rhegan will have a selection of her artwork on display at the library for the month of June. All ages and abilities welcome. Free - please contact Hawera LibraryPlis to register, or feel free to pop along on the day.

HAWERA ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY AT HAWERA OBSERVATORY 

King Edward Park, Hawera, 6 - 8am

See the stars Puanga/Rigel and Matariki/Pleisades in the pre-dawn sky with the naked eye and telescopes and herald in the New Year. Go inside the Observatory and share knowledge and ask questions with tangata whenua. Note that seeing the stars and planets depends on the sky being clear, but the event will go ahead regardless of the weather and is free and open to all.
