Council Pulls Pin on Altfest

Council Pulls Pin on Altfest

Friday, March 28, 2014

Councillors resolved not to organise or fund any more Altfest events at Mondays’ Policy Development Meeting.

The decision was made based on a Council report which reviewed the three Council organised events. The report recommended that due to low attendance the costs of running the event outweighed any benefits.

The first Altfest event, held at the Egmont A and P Show grounds in Hawera in December 2011 was designed to provide an alternative, safe and supervised event to the annual push bike pub crawl. However from selling 638 tickets at the first event in 2011 to less than 100 in 2013 organisers say the event simply never met expectations.

The report concluded that despite the large amount of time and effort put into Altfest attendance diminished each year.

The Council resolution will be will be confirmed at the next ordinary Council meeting on 14 April.
