Dare to Dream
Tuesday, September 10, 2013
After having such an outstanding response to dancing the night away to Shaun Preston last year, the South Taranaki District Council’s Relay for Life team have decided to bring the international entertainer back for another year!
Because of last year’s extremely successful event, the STDC Relay for Life team, for the first time in the seven years it has entered, became a ‘dream team’ (a team that raised over $5000 for the cause). And it is its ambition to achieve that goal again.
The team is hosting a formal dinner and dance featuring the internationally renowned entertainer on Friday 11 October.
Team leader Michelle Commerer says Shaun has always impressed the crowds when he’s performed in Taranaki.
“He’s been a feature performer in the Festival of Lights for a couple of years running,” she says. “It’s a really big coup to get him here.”
Since 2006, the Council has entered a team in the Relay for Life. Always committed to fundraising, the team has raised more than $20,000 over the years. This year’s goal is not about the glory of being tagged a ‘dream team’ – each member of the core team is passionate about the cause, being affected by Cancer in one way or another.
“It is a cause that we all have a personal interest in, one way or another. Cancer has touched so many lives, and we’re doing what we can now to assist those affected in our community and to raise cancer awareness to school students through the Taranaki Cancer Society,” says Michelle. “It’s important to note that the money raised in Taranaki, stays in Taranaki.”
The next Relay for Life will be held on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 March 2014, 12noon to 12noon at the Pukekura Raceway – visit www.relayforlife.org.nz for more information about the 24-hour team relay.
Shaun has entertained people all over New Zealand, as well as in the UK and Australia.
Tickets are $70 each, or you can get a table of 10 for $650. Please contact Michelle Commerer on 0800 111 323 or email@example.com to book tickets.
