International basketball is coming to TSB Hub.

TSB Hub Manager, Mark Mekalick, says the complex will host a HoopNation NZ Select team to play the touring Malaysian mens team on Wednesday 26 July.

“We are really excited to have international basketball being played for the first time at TSB Hub” says Mekalick. “Basketball in South Taranaki is really strong, you just need to have a look at the number of juniors playing in the intermediate, miniball, and secondary school leagues to see how many people we have playing the sport. It’s great that all those basetball fans will have an opportunity to watch an international game being played here in Hawera,” he says.

The game is one of many for the Malaysian team who are touring the North Island with stops at Auckland, Whanganui, Hawera, New Plymouth and Tauranga.

Mekalick says the game will also have some local ties with Hawera basketballer, Emmerson Potts-Broughton, selected in the HoopNation NZ Select team. The 19 year old former Normanby Primary and Hawera Intermediate student is currently playing for the Waittlesea Pacers in the Big V State Championships in Melbourne. Potts-Broughton was part of the Junior Tall Blacks last year and is looking forward to playing in front of his home crowd.

Doors open at 5.45pm with a junior curtain raiser being held at 6.15pm and then tip-off for the main game is at 7.30pm. Entry is $8 for adults, $4 for secondary and intermediate students and free for primary students and under. Food and drink will be on sale at the venue.
