Patea Dam Campground Fully Booked
Friday, October 07, 2016
It might only be October but the Patea Dam Campground is already fully booked for the Holiday period.
South Taranaki District Council (STDC) Property and Facilities Manager John Sargeant says the popular campground is fully booked over Christmas through till 2 January which means holiday makers who haven’t booked will have to find an alternative location within the district.
“We’re trying to get the message out nice and early so that prospective campers don’t drive all the way out there, and then find they have to turn around and go home,” says Mr Sargeant.
This is the first year that numbers have been restricted at the campsite to campers who have booked and paid for their sites in advance.
“The Patea Dam Campground is a fantastic location but over the last couple of seasons we started getting too many people going there, particularly at New Year’s, which resulted in some poor behavior and a few drunken louts ruining the occasion for everyone else,” says Mr Sargeant.
“So this year we are taking a multi-agency approach to make sure the campsite is suitable for families. Security guards will be on duty on New Year’s Eve and the Council, Police, Maori Wardens and Trustpower will all be working together to make sure the campers have a good time and aren’t subject to any bad behaviour,” he says.
“Patea Dam is a very special place and those who’ve gone there in the past to cause problems are on notice to keep away,” concludes Mr Sargeant.
