An Employers Breakfast hosted by Mayor Ross Dunlop at TSB Hub on Tuesday 3 July brought together over 50 business people, educators and others interested in reducing South Taranaki’s youth unemployment rate.
Mayor Ross is a member of the Mayors’ Task Force for jobs which is a network that 95% of all Mayors from NZ belong to. He is committed to their vision “that all young people under 25 years are engaged in appropriate education, training, work or other activities that contribute to their long-term economic independence and well-being.”
Breakfast speakers included Ernie Lawrence from JLE electrical who talked of his experience employing youth; Cheree Menzies from Feats on her role in getting young people ‘employer ready’ and Peter Heard, Council’s Community Development Youth Advisor, spoke about his real life experience and presented the results of a South Taranaki Employment stock take survey that Feats and Council had undertaken.
Bry Kopu from the Mayors’ Task Force for Jobs also outlined a process that has been successful in Otorahanga and Clutha with the next step the formation of a focus group to work on solutions for reducing youth unemployment and 12 people put up their hands to join that group. She said that “research shows that people who make a successful transition from school to education, training and work have better life long outcomes and that this is a long term project.”
