The South Taranaki District is a beautiful part of the country and a great place to explore. South Taranaki District Council hopes you take time to enjoy the spectacular scenery, get to know the friendly locals and experience all it has to offer.
South Taranaki has eight campgrounds across the district. Seven of these have established charges and one where no fee system is in place, but donations are encouraged.
In August 2017, the townships of Hāwera and Ōpunakē became the 46th and 47th Motorhome Friendly towns in the country and were officially welcomed into the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association’s nationwide Motorhome Friendly scheme.

Peace and quiet in a perfect spot. Ideally located beside award winning King Edward Park, the Hāwera Aquatic Centre and the region’s premier sports, recreation, events and function centre, TSB Hub, the motorcamp has two ensuited cabins, four cabins (please bring your own linen) as well as powered and unpowered camping sites. A large communal kitchen is provided, along with barbecues, a lounge, bathrooms, laundry facilities (you can use for a fee) and clothesline. The hosts live onsite to help campers with any enquiries at any time. Hāwera Holiday Park is a handy 5-minute walk to the local CBD and other attractions such as Naumai Park, the Water Tower and i-SITE, making this a perfect spot for a family holiday or the passing traveller. Wifi is available for purchase.

Ōpunakē Beach Holiday Park has a unique beachfront location in a sheltered sandy bay surrounded by crimson Pohutukawa trees. With a range of affordable accommodation including campsites, campervan or RV parks, classic caravan, standard cabins and self-contained (motel) units. Ōpunakē carries a 4 star Qualmark rating and offers modern communal amenities and wheelchair access. Only a short walk to the town’s CDB, enjoy the great kiwi outdoors in a beach environment where children can play safely at the adjacent playground, complete with a toddler’s paddling pool (seasonal).

The journey starts at the end of Ball Road – just north of Pātea. The road is unsealed and not for the faint hearted, but you will be rewarded by the atmosphere of this special place. Don’t miss out on the excellent bushwalks, hot showers, boat ramp to make enjoying those water activities on New Zealand’s longest manmade lake even easier! Get back to nature with only unpowered sites available. Bookings are not necessary.

New Zealand the way it was. Situated right on the beachfront, there are various unpowered sites available with room for motorhomes. Toilets and a children’s playground are provided. Please read the instructions on using this campground at the entrance of the property. Bookings are not necessary.

Kaupokonui Heads Road, Manaia

Kaupokonui is a family friendly place with recently renovated cabins (one cabin sleeps up to five and a big family cabin that can sleep up to seven). There are 26 powered sites and unpowered sites available. There is a small shop that opens during the summer, a children’s play area, a river for swimming and fishing and surf beach. Special winter rates from May 1 - September 30.

Pātea Motor Camp provides four tidy and well-maintained chalets and camp sites (powered and non-powered) where you can park a caravan, pitch a tent or pull in with a camper van. There is a communal kitchen, laundry room, showers and toilets available for campers. Situated at picturesque Mana Bay, Pātea, and close to the walkway, the beach, the boat ramp and children’s playground. Free wifi.

This campground offers 28 powered sites with shower, toilet and kitchen facilities for campers. Formal fees paid on an honesty system to the Waverley LibraryPlus office (58 Weraroa Rd, Waverley).

A large area available for unpowered camping with toilets and a children’s playground. Come and visit a very interesting historical site dating back to the Taranaki land wars. A relaxing place away from it all with plenty of birdlife. The site may be subject to unavailability during the wetter winter season, please give us a call before you go to see if it’s currently open.
