Free Microchip Wednesdays during July, August and September

South Taranaki District Council is offering free microchip Wednesdays throughout July, August and September, to help local owners comply with legal requirements and keep their pets safe.

The free microchipping service is available to registered dogs living in South Taranaki. No appointment is necessary, owners can simply visit the South Taranaki Pound on Beach Road, Hāwera, any Wednesday between 12noon and 1pm, with proof of current registration (red tag or a receipt of payment).

Regulatory Services Manager Chantelle Denton says the initiative was introduced to boost compliance and support responsible dog ownership.

“Our records show that around 600 dogs in our District are not microchipped. We’re hoping this free service will encourage more owners to get their dogs microchipped,” she says.

Under New Zealand law, all dogs must be registered and microchipped by the age of three months. Microchipping is also required for dogs that have been impounded or classed as menacing or dangerous.

“Beyond the legal requirements, microchipping offers real peace of mind,” says Chantelle. “It’s a permanent method of identification that makes it far more likely that a lost or stolen dog will be returned to its owner.”

For those unable to bring your dog in, home visits can be arranged at a cost of $81.

If your dog has already been microchipped by a vet or elsewhere, you’re encouraged to contact the Council so your records can be updated.
