Te Hāwera Community Board By-Election

As a result of the resignation of a member, an extraordinary vacancy has occurred in the Te Hāwera Community Board of South Taranaki District Council. Under section 120 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, notice is given that on Wednesday 7 October 2026, a by-election will be held under the first-past-the-post electoral system by postal vote for one member of the Te Hāwera Community Board.

Nominations for these positions open on Tuesday 30 June 2026 and close at noon on Tuesday 28 July 2026. Nomination papers are obtainable during this period from:

→ South Taranaki District Council’s Administration Building, 105-111 Albion Street, Hāwera;

→ Hāwera Library Plus, 121 High Street, Hāwera;

→ by phoning 0800 922 822;

→ www.southtaranaki.com.

To be eligible to stand for election, a candidate must be:

→ a New Zealand citizen (by birth or naturalisation ceremony); and

→ enrolled as a Parliamentary elector (anywhere in New Zealand); and

→ nominated by two electors whose names appear on the electoral roll within the respective area that a

candidate is standing for.

Those eligible to vote are all resident electors and nonresident ratepayer electors whose names appear on the electoral roll when it closes on Tuesday 28 July 2026.

The Preliminary Electoral Roll will be available for public inspection from Tuesday 30 June 2026 to Tuesday 28 July 2026.

Resident Roll: All parliamentary electors, including those on the Māori Electoral Roll, are automatically enrolled on the Resident Roll, at the address where they live.

Any alterations to the Resident Roll (e.g. change of address details, including new postal addresses) should be made by:

→ phoning 0800 36 76 56;

→ accessing the Electoral Commission website:

Ratepayer Roll: If a person is on the parliamentary roll in one area and pays rates on a property in another area, this person may be eligible to be enrolled on the nonresident Ratepayer Roll. A firm, company, corporation or society paying rates on a property may nominate one of its members or officers as a ratepayer elector (provided the nominated person resides outside the area). To check if you may be eligible, or to obtain an enrolment form, go to www.ratepayer.co.nz or www.southtaranaki.com.

Voting packs will be posted to all those who have enrolled from Monday 7 September 2026.

The voting period is just over four weeks (Monday 7 September 2026 to noon Wednesday 7 October 2026).

Electors may post their completed voting documents back to the electoral officer using the orange reply-paid envelope sent with their voting document. The issuing of special voting documents and the receiving of completed voting documents will be available at the South Taranaki District Council Administration Building, 105-111 Albion Street, Hāwera.

To be counted, all completed voting documents must be in the hands of the electoral officer or an electoral official by noon Wednesday 7 October 2026.

Final results will be announced on Wednesday 7 October 2026, and all results will be accessible on Council’s website.
