Hāwera CBD Street Refurbishment

Work on the refurbishment of the street furniture in Hāwera’s central business district (CBD) is scheduled to start next week.

The bollards, street bins, seats and bike stands in the High Street (from Argyle Street to Albion Street, and parts of Argyle, Victoria, Union, Regent, Princes and Albion Streets) will be removed, transported off site for blasting and painting before being returned and reinstated in a fresh black paint.

To minimise disruption, the CBD has been broken into five separate areas, with the contractors removing and refurbishing one area at a time. The work will start from the Argyle Street end (see map above).

The refurbishment work is expected to be completed by the end of September.

We have decided not to refurbish the 70 green streetlights in the CBD during this time. When we inspected the condition of the lights, it was apparent that due to the amount of rust on the lightpoles, that the blasting process would likely make them worse, which would be costly to rebuild to make them look the same, so we are going to replace them with something completely new.

This work is being planned to be undertaken separately once the street furniture refurbishment programme has been completed.
