From Plans to Play - Eltham's New 3x3 Basketball Court Begins
Exciting work will be underway soon at Soldiers Park in Eltham with the installation of a 3x3 basketball court, a standout project from Eltham’s Town Revitalisation Roadmap.
This court was a clear priority, voiced loudly by local youth during the initial masterplan consultation back in 2019 and reinforced through recent town Revitalisation Roadmap feedback.
Thanks to the incredible volunteers from the Eltham Lions, the old play pit has been cleared to make way for this fresh new space. Weather permitting, construction is expected to take 6 - 8 weeks, aiming for completion in September 2025.
The court’s acrylic surface will be installed in February 2026 when the weather is warmer and schools are in session, minimising disruption. Until then, temporary markings will keep the game going. A big shout-out to Basketball New Zealand for generously donating the hoop.
The current hoop will stay in place until the new court surface work is completed at the end of February.
A blessing ceremony led by kaumatua John Hooker was held in June to mark the start of this exciting journey.
Safety fencing will remain until a final Karakia ceremony blesses the site, after which the court will be fully open to the public.
