Whales in the Spotlight: Lighting the Ōpunakē Mural

Painted by local Ōpunakē artist Chris Fuller in 2023, the Sinclair Event Centre’s toilet block quickly became a standout feature. As part of Ōpunakē’s revitalisation project, the decision was made to further enhance the mural with carefully placed lighting—creating a warm atmosphere.

Fuller’s large-scale depiction of majestic humpback whales beautifully reflected the community’s deep connection to the sea. The new addition of subtle lighting not only highlights the whales gliding across the wall but also softens the surrounding space, transforming an everyday facility into a vibrant coastal landmark that embodies Ōpunakē’s identity and pride.
