Eltham’s Got Game — Court Now Open!
South Taranaki District Council is excited to announce that the brand-new 3x3 basketball court at Te Wā’iawa ‘ūmārie o Mangaw’araw’ara/Soldier's Park in Eltham is officially complete and open to the public!
This standout project from Eltham’s Town Revitalisation Roadmap was a clear priority, voiced loudly by local youth during the initial masterplan consultation back in 2019 and reinforced through recent town Revitalisation Roadmap feedback.
Thanks to the Eltham Lions for clearing the site and to Basketball New Zealand for generously donating the hoop.
While the final acrylic surface will be installed in February 2026, temporary markings are in place so the community can enjoy the court right away.
South Taranaki District Council Community Development Manager David Pentz says a blessing ceremony, led by Kaumatua John Hooker, was held on October 24 to mark the final stage of the project, with a closing Karakia officially opening the court.
"Basketball New Zealand kindly donated the goal, and it’s been in discussion they will participate in Eltham’s Community Event in January where a 3x3 basketball comp will happen and they will arrange some players to join, says Mr Pentz. "This court is a fantastic addition to Eltham’s recreational facilities and a great example of youth voices shaping our town’s future. Thank you to everyone involved — we cannot wait to see it in action!"
