Council’s proposal to close part of Cambridge Street, Pātea
The South Taranaki District Council is inviting feedback on a proposal to permanently close a short section of Cambridge Street in Pātea, between Egmont Street (State Highway 3) and Dorset Street, to create a safer and more vibrant pedestrian space at the town’s southern gateway.
The proposal is part of the wider Pātea Town Revitalisation Programme, which aims to enhance the town’s amenity, safety and community connection. This stage of the programme is known as the Pātea South Development.
The idea for transforming the space was first identified in the 2019 Pātea Town Masterplan, which called for safer pedestrian areas, better public spaces and stronger links between the town centre, river and beach. Since then, the Pātea Co-Design Group made up of iwi, hapū, community representatives and Council staff has helped shape a vision that celebrates local identity and provides a welcoming entrance into Pātea.
A Traffic Assessment completed in July 2025 found that permanently closing this section of Cambridge Street would have minimal impact on traffic flow, with alternative routes available for vehicles. The study also identified that the closure would improve safety by replacing two crossroads with safer T-intersections. Local businesses and Waka Kotahi NZTA were consulted earlier in 2025 and expressed their support for the proposal.
South Taranaki District Council’s community services group manager Rob Haveswood says the project will create a positive change for the community.
“This proposal supports the community’s long-term vision for Pātea by creating a more people-friendly town entrance. It’s about improving safety while giving locals and visitors a more attractive public place to gather and connect,” says Rob.
Council is now seeking public feedback before making a final decision.
