Birdlife Productions Brings Interactive Puppet Theatre to LibraryPlus

South Taranaki LibraryPlus are thrilled to welcome Birdlife Productions Theatre for Children to the district this February, bringing their award‑winning, highly interactive live performances to local communities.

Birdlife Productions’ popular shows are known for their immersive storytelling, puppetry, music and audience participation. With limited seating available at each venue, attendee numbers for each performance are capped. For this reason, places have initially been offered to schools and early childhood education (ECE) facilities.

From Saturday 7 February, any remaining spaces will be made available to the public on a first‑come, first‑served basis. Families and community members interested in attending are encouraged to visit their local LibraryPlus centre to collect free tickets.

South Taranaki District Council Senior Outreach Librarian Hannah Hancock says the performances promise to be a memorable experience for tamariki and whānau alike.

“We look forward to welcoming families and community members to what promises to be an engaging and memorable experience with Birdlife Productions,” says Hannah.

Birdlife Productions Theatre for Children—also known as Bridget and Roger Sanders—are an award‑winning professional partnership with a passion for communicating a deeper understanding of the world through puppetry, masks, music and storytelling. They will perform six shows across South Taranaki LibraryPlus.

Box of Birds - ages 3–6 years

Box of Birds is an exquisite puppet theatre experience created especially for young children. Featuring interactive songs and percussion, the story follows Peter and his grandma as they build a nesting box for Ruru. Through learning patience and embarking on an exciting nighttime forest walk, Peter discovers the wonder of New Zealand’s native birds.

The show features familiar local species such as piwakawaka, kererū, tūī and ruru, and introduces tamariki to the importance of caring for native birdlife. Rich in live music, singing, audience interaction, masked dance and magical puppetry, Box of Birds also embraces principles of whānau relationships, respect for grandparents, connection to the natural world and environmental stewardship.

The Boy with Wings - ages 4–10 years

The Boy with Wings is a theatrical delight that introduces children to the concept of bird migration through a layered and imaginative storytelling experience. The production combines a contemporary narrative led by an enthusiastic “bird expert” character with an ancient fable about a young man guided by his heart on a remarkable journey.

Enhanced by digital projection, handmade puppets, original live songs and humour, the story unfolds from a set made of packing boxes that transform into surprising and imaginative worlds. The result is a show that captivates, inspires and stays with young audiences long after the curtain falls.
