Eltham LibraryPlus and public toilets - asbestos testing

Update 20/02/2026: The asbestos test results have come back from the lab, and we are pleased to say that the tests for the Library and public toilets were negative.

This means the LibraryPlus and toilets will be re-opened tomorrow (Saturday 21 February) usual hours (9:30am – noon).

As expected, some asbestos was found in the Library carpark near the neighbouring fence where the work was undertaken. This area (the carpark) will remain closed while a thorough clean up process is completed with Worksafe and Health NZ/Te Whatu Ora.

South Taranaki District Council has temporarily closed the Eltham LibraryPlus, its adjoining car park and public toilets as a precaution while we undertake asbestos testing.

The move comes after a neighbouring property owner began demolishing a garage adjacent to the Council facilities. During the demolition, asbestos was identified.

South Taranaki District Council group manager of community services Rob Haveswood says the closures are a precautionary measure.

“Public safety is our top priority. At this stage, we’re taking a careful and measured approach while specialists undertake thorough testing.”

Haveswood says certified asbestos assessors will be on site early next week conducting tests. The closures will remain in place until Council is confident there is no risk to staff or the public.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank the community for their patience and understanding,” says Rob.
