South Taranaki Moves to Level 1 Water Restrictions

South Taranaki District Council is introducing Level 1 water restrictions from Wednesday 18 March 2026. With little recent rainfall, no meaningful rain expected through the end of March, and stream and river levels sitting low for this time of year, this step is necessary to protect the health of local water sources.

Level 1 restrictions mean all unattended hoses, sprinklers, pool filling, lawn watering, and residential irrigation systems are banned, and apply district wide.

Hand held hoses may be used early in the morning or in the evening on the odds and evens system — even numbered houses on even calendar dates and odd numbered houses on odd calendar dates between 6pm – 8am.

“Level 1 restrictions are a good reminder for our community to use water wisely,” says South Taranaki District Council works delivery manager Rahul Sharma. “While summer might be over, the downward trend in river levels due to reduced rainfall is clear. Taking this proactive step now helps protect our water supply so there is enough to go around.”

These small, practical adjustments, taken collectively, help ensure the district continues to manage its water responsibly over the late summer period, especially as river levels approach resource consent thresholds.

Residents can also help us by looking for, and fixing, any leaks on your property or farm. All water savings can make a difference.

Restrictions will remain in place until further notice.

Ways to help conserve water include:

• Avoid unnecessary outdoor watering

• Use the odds/evens system for permitted hand-held hose use

• Check taps, pipes, and outdoor fittings for leaks and repair them promptly

• Run full loads when washing clothes and dishes

• Reduce how often you wash your car or boat

• Domestic users, farms, and industry are also asked to use water sparingly.

• Don’t hose down driveways or buildings
