Courtesy crossings in Hāwera: using them safely together

With the recent fine weather, it has been encouraging to see more people out and about in the town centre, supporting local shops, cafés, and eateries. This increased activity brings added vibrancy to Hāwera, while also resulting in busier streets that require extra care from everyone.

Courtesy crossings are marked with “Cross with Care” to indicate that they are informal crossing points. Pedestrians do not have a legal right of way at these locations, and drivers are expected to slow down and remain alert, particularly in areas with higher levels of pedestrian activity. Because these crossings can be interpreted differently, especially by visitors or those unfamiliar with the area, pedestrians are encouraged to wait patiently until there are no oncoming vehicles or until vehicles have come to a complete stop to allow them to cross safely.

The Council continues to assess courtesy crossings to identify opportunities for improving safety. Work is ongoing alongside Police and road safety partners to promote safe driving behaviour, with a commitment to being proactive and ensuring everyone feels confident moving around Hāwera.

Members of the community are encouraged to share any specific feedback with the Council so it can be considered in future reviews of pedestrian and traffic safety in the town centre.
