Work Underway on Pātea Saltmarsh Pathway and Viewing Platform Project

A blessing ceremony held in March at Ārangirangi has marked an important milestone in the Pātea Saltmarsh Project, ahead of construction works on a new pathway and viewing platform.

The ceremony brought together representatives from South Taranaki District Council, Ngāti Ruanui and members of the Town Revitalisation Co-Design Group.

Actual construction began on 11 May, and works are expected to be completed within approximately eight weeks.

“Once complete, the project will feature a new pathway and viewing platform, enabling the community to connect more closely with the saltmarsh environment while protecting the area’s unique ecological and cultural values,” says South Taranaki Mayor Phil Nixon.

“Landscaping and planting will be carried out in-house by Council’s Forest Restoration team, with all required plant species already sourced. These works will enhance biodiversity and support the long-term restoration of the saltmarsh environment,” says Phil.

This project reflects the ongoing partnership between Council, iwi and the community, supporting ongoing efforts to revitalise and enhance the Pātea saltmarsh area.
