South Taranaki Students Collect Nearly 260,000 Milk Bottle Tops
This year's Taranaki Milk Top Challenge saw students, staff, whānau and local supporters collect just over 460 kilograms of plastic milk bottle tops, equating to almost 260,000 individual tops that were kept out of landfill and away from kerbside recycling contamination.
While a single milk top might not seem like much, plastic waste remains a growing environmental challenge. Some predictions suggest there could be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans by 2050. That's a difficult thing to picture here in South Taranaki, but it is a reminder that every effort counts. Challenges like this show how communities can make a positive difference, one milk top at a time.
Leading the way this year were:
🥇 Whenuakura School - 363 milk tops per student
🥈 Hāwera Christian School - 294 milk tops per student
🥉 Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Tamarongo, Ōpunake - 201 milk tops per student
A huge congratulations to all participating schools and everyone who got behind the challenge. Whether collecting tops at home, in the classroom, or through the wider community, every contribution helped build an impressive district-wide result.
More than the final tally, the challenge is about encouraging good habits, reducing waste and showing young people how collective action can make a difference. It's also a great example of the community spirit South Taranaki is known for.
The Taranaki Milk Top Challenge will return next year, with schools already able to start collecting. So keep those clean milk tops aside and support your local school. It's not too late for new schools to join the challenge. If your school would like to take part, email envirosus@stdc.govt.nz for more information.
After all, every milk top counts. And as this year's results show, those small contributions can soon stack up into something worth celebrating. See below for the full competition results.
