Nukumaru Water Scheme Referendum
NOTICE OF REFERENDUM
SOUTH TARANAKI DISTRICT COUNCIL
DIVESTMENT OF NUKUMARU WATER SCHEME REFERENDUM
Under sections 52 and 54 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, notice is given that on Wednesday 23 December 2026, the Nukumaru Water Scheme Referendum will be held under the First Past the Post electoral system by postal vote.
The referendum required under section 75 of the Local Government (Water Services) Act 2005, is being held to determine whether or not the Nukumaru Water Scheme be divested, by way of transfer, to the Nukumarau Water Scheme Society Inc. The referendum is binding and if 50% or more of the votes cast are in favour of the divestment, ownership of the Water Scheme will transfer to the Nukumaru Water Scheme Society Inc. If less than 50% of the votes cast are against the divestment, the Water Scheme will remain under South Taranaki District Council ownership.
Electoral Roll
The Electoral Roll to be used for the referendum closes at 5pm, Tuesday 13 October 2026 and can be inspected during normal business hours from Tuesday 15 September 2026 at:
- South Taranaki District Council Administration Building, 105-111 Albion Street, Hāwera;
- Waverley LibraryPlus, 58 Weraroa Road, Waverley.
Those qualified to vote in the referendum are:
i. A residential elector whose address in respect of which the person is registered as a parliamentary elector whose property is serviced by the Nukumaru Water Scheme; or
ii. A (non-resident) ratepayer elector whose property is serviced by the Nukumaru Water Scheme.
Following closure of the roll, the electoral officer may, on application of any person who is or claims to be entitled to be enrolled or any other person or otherwise, make any necessary corrections to the names, addresses, abbreviations, or marks appearing in the electoral roll.
