Tips and Tricks to Save Water
Here are some simple tips to help you save water and make the most of summer.
Tip #1: Water your garden wisely - Don’t water the garden in the middle of the day as the sun will evaporate it. Water your plants in the early hours of the morning or in the evening just before it gets dark outside, preferably with a handheld hose, or watering can.
Tip #2: By attaching a trigger nozzle to hand-held hoses means the hose isn't just running all of the time and water is only used when needed - therefore, an easy way to save water.
Tip #3: By installing a rainwater tank – you can use this free resource from the sky for watering the garden, washing the car or even flushing toilets all without using any mains water .
Tip #4 - Depending on the size of the leak, one dripping tap can waste anywhere from 30 – 1,000 litres of water per day! If you have any dripping taps in your home or around your property, make sure to fix these as soon as possible.
Tip #5: If you must wash your car, do it in the shade and on the lawn. This means that not only does your car get sparkly clean, but the grass gets a much needed drink! Make sure you use a bucket too so you’re not wasting water unnecessarily.
Tip #6 - Doing something as simple as putting the plug in when you wash veges instead of letting the tap run can save a significant amount of water.
Tip #7: In between your daily toothbrushing and skincare routine, turn off the tap. Running taps can waste 10 litres of water a minute.
Tip #8: Choose water and energy efficient appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers. The more stars on the rating label, the greater your water and cost savings.
Tip #9: By replacing your old showerhead, you can actually get more pressure and use less water! These can be bought from your local hardware or plumbing store. Get into the habit of using a shower timer, this will help to minimize the water usage from long showers.
Tip #10: Choose to mulch. Putting mulch around trees and shrubs helps retain soil moisture, reducing the need for frequent watering.
Tip #11: Shutting off taps properly after use prevents unnecessary water waste. Even small drips can add up to significant losses over time.
Tip #12: Washing only full loads of dishes and laundry helps conserve water. This simple habit can save a substantial amount over time.
